Optika Solutions in #2 spot in latest Techboard Startup Ranking

[16 September 2016] Optika Solutions was today announced in the number two spot on the Techboard Startup Ranking #26.

The company’s previous highest ranking was 526.

It rounds out what has been an extremely busy two weeks since the West Perth software and solutions company took out the 2016 iAwards Innovation of the Year and Big Data Innovation of the Year at the Australian Innovation Industry Association (AIIA) annual awards in Melbourne on 1 September.

Optika Solutions Managing Director, Matt Schneider said “Winning the 2016 iAwards Innovation of the Year for Akumen was a thrill for the whole team at Optika Solutions.  While we have been around for a decade, not many people knew about us due to the nature of our work and the confidentiality agreements that go with it!  We very much appreciate the work Techboard does.  Achieving second spot on their last ranking board is such a great opportunity, as we are keen to promote Akumen to as wide an audience as possible to truly connect people and data.”

Optika Solutions will go on to showcase Akumen when they compete in the APICTA Awards, to be held in Chinese Taipei from 2 – 5 December.

2016 Innovation of the Year and Big Data Innovation of the Year Awards – Akumen by Optika Solutions

[2 September 2016] – West Perth-based Optika Solutions was awarded the 2016 National Innovation of the Year Award at this year’s The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA)  iAWARDS presentation ceremony for their world-leading data analytics platform, Akumen.

Akumen was also category winner for the Big Data Innovation of the Year.

The iAwards are Australia’s leading awards program for recognising and rewarding Australian innovation.

This year, more than 600 entries were received from government, startups, corporates and students. Entrants competed in five base award categories across Business Services, Community Services, Consumer, Industrial & Primary Services, and Public Sector & Government as well as Student Categories and Cross Categories.

Optika Solutions Managing Director, Matthew Schneider said, “I am incredibly proud that Optika’s efforts with the development of Akumen have been recognised by the AIIA.  We know that Akumen is a revolutionary product, full of complexity and opportunity, and we are honoured to not only have won our category, ‘Big Data’, but to have Akumen awarded Innovation of the Year is truly fantastic. “

Launched in 2014, Akumen is an innovative, cloud-based simulation and data modelling tool that operates on a whole of industry scale.  For the first time, it brings people and data together in one unique, dynamic and completely collaborative environment to give true insight into operations and opportunities.  Akumen’s unique advantage is its capacity to process vast quantities of data, be it data at rest (what has happened in the past), data in action (what is happening now) and data with potential (insight into the future landscape) which offers clients a superior tool to manage, model and represent data relevant to their business at any point in time.

Optika Solutions CEO, Prof Steve Hannah said:  “We have been working hard to tell the story of Akumen in a way that makes sense to non-technical professionals.  By removing the technical complexities of data science, we have created a user-friendly platform that allows users to focus on outcomes faster, more efficiently and with a greater depth of insight.  We couldn’t be more proud to have been selected as the winner of the Innovation of the Year Award at the iAwards. Being afforded the opportunity to showcase Akumen to an international audience through the APICTA Awards is sensational. The world is changing rapidly, and we are proud to be driving growth and innovation from Western Australia“.

As winner of the Innovation of the Year Award, Akumen developers Optika Solutions will later this year travel to Chinese Taipei on an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the esteemed international APICTA Awards.

A celebration lunch was hosted at the Western Australia Club on Friday 17 June to mark the completion of the Master of Science in Mineral Economics of the Mineral and Energy Economics Department at Curtin Graduate School of Business.  The 18 month course, run by the Curtin University School of Business, cumulates in a one week intensive unit where students are required to conduct a real-world analysis of project and financial evaluation of a mining project.

This year’s intensive final unit was supported by members of the team from Optika Solutions.  Led by Optika’s Principal Consultant, Dr Jose Saavedra-Rosas, who is also is an Adjunct Professor and Academic Director of the Mineral Economics program offered at the University of Chile, Santiago, students were offered the use of Optika’s decision support platform, Akumen, to do their analysis and reporting.

Dr Saavedra-Rosas said “We were happy to offer students the use of the Akumen platform to conduct their research and make their evaluations. The students who chose to use Akumen found they were able to generate in depth insight and take advantage of the collaboration mechanisms offered by the platform, all of which helped them work through to the best solution and recommendation for their ‘client’. “

Students and staff enjoyed the hospitality of the Western Australia Club, where they were joined by Hon Bill Marmion, MLA, Minister for State Development; Finance; Innovation.

Optika Solutions have been working closely with Curtin University over the past 18 months on various research and development projects.  The partnership sees the West Perth based technology developer working closely with Western Australia’s preeminent technology university on new innovations, products and opportunities that continue to deliver value to the State. Recently, this partnership has been materialised in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Optika Solutions and Curtin Business School to further develop academic and joint research activities.

Rail Simulation Case Study

In recent years Optika Solutions has been involved in modelling large, complex supply chains which have depended heavily on detailed simulation of rail networks.  Rail operations had a significant impact on tonnage throughput, grade variability and financial gains/penalties.  Since the purpose of modelling included measuring impact on net revenue and evaluation of management strategies, it was important to capture rail behaviour to a level of accuracy that goes beyond many simpler logistical models.

Examples of the degree of rail complexity include:

  • Scheduling of trains to meet optimised medium term ship consignment plans;
  • Forward planning of train terminal interactions to avoid congestion at loading/unloading areas;
  • Prioritisation of trains carrying “high demand” products;
  • Modelling of standard passing behaviour on single and double track sections;
  • Modelling of non-standard passing operations such as reversal on junction sections to allow passing;
  • Physical detail such as acceleration, deceleration, wagon-by-wagon loading, cut-out of overload wagons etc;
  • Constraints of crewing and rostering;
  • Testing a variety of configurations to confirm rail design and planning methodologies.

In order to achieve the above requirements, Optika Solutions have developed a powerful yet flexible simulation platform that integrates rail into the planning and logistical modelling components.  Standard rail management and movement allows rapid set up of models and yet can be replaced as required by customised modules to capture project specific behaviour.  This provides a high level of project specific customisation and means that the level of rail detail included is determined by the level of modelling accuracy required, not by limitations of the modelling platform.

When modelling is being used to measure the impact of rail on total system behaviour and costs, it requires not only capturing the physical rail interactions but also accurately reflecting the management approaches that are applied in practice at various levels within the system.  The may extend from high-level planning including ordering of ships and planning of shipment cargoes, to mid-level planning in which train movements are scheduled to meet panned operations, down to low-level planning such as management of particular train trips to avoid congestion and manage movement delays.  Only accurate modelling of the planning operations allows the impact of these operations to be evaluated, hence testing and improved management approaches.

Optika’s modelling capabilities are highly suited to complex, whole-of-system mine to port modelling which involves interplays of logistical goals, grade quality  constraints, and cost mitigation management.  Model operations may be defined heuristically, but equally may involve degrees of optimisation that reflect human decision-making in response to a wide variety of factors.  The ability to combine business driven management with physically accurate and detailed modelling provide an unparalleled modelling capability for large logistics-chain businesses.

iAwards Finalist

OPTIKA SOLUTIONS’ “AKUMEN” NAMED AS iAWARDS NATIONAL FINALIST FOR MOST INNOVATIVE COLLABORATIVE TECHNOLOGY
